For my clients and subscribers on the East coast, please be aware that there is currently a listeria outbreak. States impacted include: Connecticut, District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. Most, though not all the products in the recall associated with this outbreak contain animal products of some kind. Many contain dairy or eggs, which could be problematic for those vegetarians out there. Either way, please check out the alert and list of recalled products here.
This is an important time to mention that the vast majority of food borne illnesses can be traced back to animal ag operations. Even in those cases where the plants are at the center of a recall, the origin of the contamination is almost always from a nearby animal ag operation, or the use of non-vegan organic fertilizers such as manure.
Dr. Michael Greger from NutritionFacts.org has spoken in the past about contamination of our food system from animal ag operations. In these two videos he includes a talk about infectious disease in our food. Check this link out for a list of videos that contain information about Salmonella. The more one reads about all these nasty infectious diseases coming from the animal ag industry, the more one starts to wonder if so many people’s gut microbiome and other gut health issues are related to all the infectious bacteria in our food supply thanks to animal ag. Then one starts to thank themselves for going vegan.
